The Land of whom? The Property Bureau of Chulalongkorn University vs The Shrine of Goddess Tubtim –- the conflict between rules on land ownership and the protection of community culture

In June 2020, the eviction order issued by Chulalongkorn University ('CU') catalysed yet another round of conflict between its Property Bureau and the Chinese keepers of the Goddess Tubtim Shrine. Having planned to build new edifices and student dormitories, CU required the shrine-keepers to leave the area by 15 June 2020. This article seeks to analyse the conflict between the two sides based on the principles of property law, in particular, the tension between rules on land ownership and the protection of community culture.
