The words in 8,410 sentences were collected from the Korean language national corpus of The National Institute of the Korean Language, and 225 Korean idioms with the words 눈 [nun] ‘eyes’ 귀 [kwi] ‘ears’ 코 [kʰo] ‘nose’ and 입 [ʔip] ‘mouth’ were taken from the Korean idiom dictionary. The analysis started from finding the attribute of 눈 [nun] ‘eyes’ 귀 [kwi] ‘ears’ 코 [kʰo] ‘nose’ and 입 [ʔip]. There were 3 attributes. They were place, things and living things, in addition to analysing metaphorical meaning by conceptual metaphor theory developed by Lakoff and Johnson (1980). The results were found that there are 1,100 metaphorical meanings. They were divided into three kinds of Conceptual Metaphor namely (1) Conceptual Metaphor of place consisting of five concepts. They were PLACE WITH BOUNDARY, PLACE WITH AREA, PLACE WITH BRIGHTNESS, PLACE WITH DISTANCE and PLACE WITH DENSITY. (2) Conceptual Metaphor of things consisting of eight concepts. They were APPLIANCES, THINGS WHICH CAN HAVE THEIR OWNERS CHANGE, PACKAGES, THINGS WHICH CAN BE DAMAGED. TEXTILES, EQUIPMENT, THINGS THAT CAN SHINE, and MACHINES. (3) Conceptual Metaphor of living things, consisting of two concepts. They were HUMANS and ANIMALS. This research outcome leads us to understand the conceptual system of Korean through organs metaphor. The benefit of this research also supports Korean study and cross cultural comunication that is neccessary to Korean learners for effectively communicating with native Korean.

Keyword: conceptual metaphors / Korean /eyes, ears, nose, mouth
ER -
