The Diversity of Migrant Groups in Thailand: Population and Social Perspectives

Abstract
This research is a quantitative research based on data from the survey of the migration situation of Thais in 2016 as part of the project on demographic change and well-being in the context of the ageing society, by College of Population Studies, Chulalongkorn University. For the sample, 2,631 migrants were sampled at the household level by multi-stage random sampling. In this study, we distinguish the diversity of migrant groups in Thailand as 4 major groups: migrants focusing on reason about family and nuptiality, migrants from Bangkok, migrants focusing on the advancement of life, and seasonal migrants. It is found that the migrants who focus on the advancement of life are the majority of migrants in the country. This can be explained by the need of socio-economic mobility or social mobility under the context of spatial inequality.
