Changes in Thailand’s Higher Education: Problems and Challenges

Abstract
Higher Education plays a crucial role in the long term national development for it has core
missions to produce skilled workers to labor market andto innovate modern knowledge for the
society that lead to enhancing competitive capability of the nation. However, the study found
various problems in Thailand higher education system ranging from the admission system, the
administration process, and the outcomes that did not meet with the needs of the economy.
The study suggests improving four main issues i.e., (1) Improving the governance system and
the quality assurance system so as to ensure the transparency and accountability. (2) Improving
the government budgeting and the student loan to be a demand side oriented system.
(3) Improving the admission system by abolish the university’s direct admission and have the
admission exam in accordance with the curriculum of the upper secondary education. And
(4) Encouraging the competition with foreign universities by adjusting and/or dissolving any
regulations that hindered foreign universities that need to invest in higher education services in
Thailand.
