Needs of the Elderly in Samphanthawong District, Bangkok, for Social Welfare

Abstract
This study aimed to 1) study the needs of the elderly for social welfare, and 2) compare the social welfare needs of the elderly in Samphanthawong District, Bangkok, The research was qualitative. The sample group of this research consisted of 380 elderly people aged 60 and over who reside in Samphanthawong District, Bangkok. The research instruments was questionnaires consists of 2 parts were 1) checklist on the general information of the respondents 2) about the needs of elderly for welfare. The sample group expressed their opinions on the 5 levels of demand according to the Likert scale. The statistical methods used for data analysis were frequency, percentage, mean () and standard deviation (S.D.) while t-test and one-way ANOVA for testing of statistical values.
The research findings revealed that:
1. Overall, elderly people had a high level of need for social welfare ( = 3.53). The results of the analysis for each factor also found that the elderly people showed the highest level of need for income (
= 4.10), health (
= 3.93), education (
= 3.77), and shelter (
= 3.74) by ranking them into 1sthighest priority, 2nd highest priority, 3rd highest priority, and 4th highest priority, respectively. On the other hand, the factors regarding the security for life and assets and recreations were at moderate level and rated as the 5th (
= 2.89) and 6thhighest priorities (
= 2.74), respectively.
2. The comparison of the needs of the elderly for welfare showed that differences in their gender, age, status, education level, income and the type of residence also caused differences in needs for benefits, where as difference in their occupation caused no difference in needs for benefits, which was not statistically significant as .05.
