A Study on the Needs for Developing Comic Books to Enhance Reading Comprehension Skills for Grade 4 Students at Border Patrol Police School, Sa Kaeo Province

Abstract

The purposes of this research were to study the needs for developing comic books to enhance reading comprehension skills for grade 4 students at Border Patrol Police School, Sa Kaeo Province. It is survey-based research utilizing qualitative methods through structured interviews.  The participants include: 1. Three primary school teachers from Border Patrol Police Schools. 2. Two experts in Thai language instruction. The quantitative research component involves data collection through a needs assessment questionnaire. The research utilized tools such as a suitability assessment form, a storyboard assessment form, and a needs assessment form for data analysis, which included mean () and standard deviation (S.D.).
The results revealed that: 1. The modified Necessary Index (PNI modified) revealed an overall average of 0.64. The researcher has prioritized the top three needs as follows: using stimulating media, reading with comprehension, and reading for main ideas, respectively. 2. The assessment of suitability found that it was at the highest level (= 4.64, S.D. = 0.30). When classified by aspect, the aspect with the highest average was image design, at the highest level (= 4.76, S.D. = 0.22), followed by content design at the highest level (= 4.73, S.D. = 0.24). Overall design and language use were also at the highest level (= 4.66, S.D. = 0.40) and (= 4.63, S.D. = 0.24), respectively. The aspect with the lowest average was plot design, at a high level (= 4.88, S.D. = 0.78).
