A STUDY OF SYNTACTIC FUNCTION AND USAGES OF THE “GOU X” CONSTRUCTION AND ITS PEDAGOGY

Abstract
“Gou” (够) is one of a crucial word that learners must handle in teaching Chinese as a second language. Therefore, “Gou X” has automatically become a must teaching and learning point. Based on the CCL modern Chinese corpus of Peking University has been involved for analyzing the part of speech of “Gou” and the syntactic function of “Gou X”. We have particularly studied the situation of using the “Gou X” construction in various frameworks. The results show that: (1) the dictionaries and textbooks on Chinese as a foreign language have different opinions on the part of speech of the “Gou”. We find that the part of speech of “Gou” is different according to its meaning and matching function. (2) The “Gou X” construction is rich and complicated, and also the syntactic function is varied. (3) In the "Gou X" construction, the most common structural form is "Gou + monosyllabic noun", " Gou + noun with emotional meaning ", "Gou + verb" and "Gou + adjective". Among them, "Gou + adjective" is the most widely used. Finally, corresponding teaching suggestions are given at the end of this paper.
