Abstract

Objective: To identify the factors associated with burden of schizophrenia caregivers.

Methodology: This cross-sectional study was conducted in Yangtalad district, Kalasin province. Questionnaire and Zarit burden interview were used to collect data of caregivers and schizophrenia patients. Data was analyzed in terms of Frequency, Percentage, Mean (Standard deviation), Min, Max, Chi-Square test, Odds ratio (OR), 95% Confidence interval and Multiple Logistic Regression.

Results: 80 caregivers were included in the study. Rate of caregiver burden was 70% and was categorized as mild burden 8.8%, moderate burden 32.5% and severe burden 28.8%.

Two factors found to be significantly associated with burden of schizophrenia caregivers were; 1) financial source of the family, when caregiver is the only source of income, the burden was     12.57 times compared to those with financial help from others (adjusted OR = 12.57[95%CI: 1.14-138.94], p-value=0.039). 2) Patient’s symptoms in the last 1 month, in case of caregivers of patients with worsened symptoms, the burden was 18.91 times compared to those with stable or improved status (adjusted OR = 18.91[95%CI: 1.69-211.68], p-value=0.017).

Conclusion: The factors associated with burden of schizophrenia caregivers were financial source of the family, and patient’s symptoms in the last 1 month.
