Capacity Development of Village Health Volunteers to Promote and Support for Diabetes and Hypertension Care in Waeng Yai District, Khon Kaen Province

Abstract

     The research was conducted, using a participatory process to study the development model to develop the capacity of village health volunteers through the participatory planning process (AIC) to promote support for diabetes and hypertension care in Waeng Yai District, Khonkaen Province. The Appreciation- Influence-Control (AIC) model was applied in a group of 66 persons consisting of community leaders, government personnel, village health volunteers, and diabetes and hypertension patients. Data were collected
by interview and group discussion. The quantitative data were analyzed by paired t-test. The content analysis was used for the qualitative data. The results showed that the development processes of promoting support for diabetes and hypertension care by community participation included 3 steps: 1. Appreciation (A) 2. Influence (I) and 3) Control (C). The process resulted in a corresponding understanding of the situation and problems of diabetes and hypertension care in the area, and jointly defined programs/projects to develop diabetes and hypertension care in the area. It also provides the chance for the community to take an active part in caring for diabetes and hypertension patients. Also result that diabetes and hypertension patients receiving care and support from the village health volunteers, which has an average score of participation increased significantly (p-value<0.001), the score of diabetes and hypertension for village health volunteers increased significantly (pvalue< 0.001), the score of promote support diabetes and hypertension care increased significantly (pvalue< 0.001) and the score of patients and caregivers satisfaction for the promote support diabetes and hypertension care increased significantly (p-value<0.001). In conclusion, the use of a participatory planning process is an appropriate approach, which is to allow network partners in the area at all levels to take a role and take responsibility. and cooperate with a mechanism Cultivating health network partners in the area to raise awareness and participate in activities to develop care for patients with diabetes and hypertension through community participation. Achieve success and result in better conditions for patients with diabetes and hypertension.
