This quasi-experimental study aimed to compare self-management outcomes before and after participation in a self-management program for delayed progression of chronic kidney disease in patients with stage 3b chronic kidney disease at Phakhao Hospital, Loei. The sample group consisted of 50 patients with stage 3b chronic kidney disease, divided into two groups: an experimental group and a control group, with 25 patients in each group. The groups were randomly assigned using purposive sampling. The control group received standard nursing care, while the experimental group received a self-management program to delay the progression of chronic kidney disease. Behavioral assessments, knowledge assessments, and clinical outcomes were evaluated before and after the intervention in both the control and experimental groups. The self-management program consisted of two activities: 1) providing knowledge on self-management and 2) promoting adherence to the self-management program for delaying the progression of chronic kidney disease in patients with stage 3b. The study was conducted at the outpatient clinic of the Nephrology Department, Phakhao Hospital, Loei, over six months, from June 2019 to December 2019.
The study found that after participating in the self-management program, the experimental group had higher knowledge scores than the control group. There was no significant difference in the behavioral assessments of self-management between the experimental and control groups after participating in the self-management program. The average clinical outcome (Scr) did not differ significantly between the experimental and control groups after participating in the self-management program. Therefore, it is recommended to implement the self-management program to delay the progression of chronic kidney disease in patient care and to improve the existing care system for patients with chronic kidney disease to support achieving the defined indicators.
