Nursing care of HIV patients with opportunistic infections: A case study

Abstract

     This study was case study aimed to study the nursing process for HIV patients with opportunistic infections. A 37-year-old Thai male patient was first diagnosed with infection in 2017 while receiving treatment for pulmonary tuberculosis. After knowing the blood results into the system, HIV infection with TB lung was diagnosed. Pulmonary tuberculosis was treated by taking medicine for 6 months. Patients have missed appointments and missed medication during 2018-2021.

     Results: Patient was admitted in ARV Clinic for treatment of opportunistic diseases on December 30, 2021. Patient felt tired easily and could not eat much food. The patient had pain in the mouth, a red rash in the body for 7 days and blurred vision. Nursing care for 3 phases, before medical examination, patient had a risks tissue depletion of oxygen, risk of infection in the retina anxiety because of lacking of knowledge of the progression of the disease. During medical examination, patient had a complications and opportunistic fungal diseases in the brain, risk of resistance to antiviral and tuberculosis drugs, a skin infection, insufficient nutrition. The nurse takes care and closely observed symptoms of patient. The patient admitted to the medical ward, and was followed up with visits, and received medication using Amphotericin-B for 5 days. Patient was discharged on January 7, 2022. The patient had normal symptom, take medicine continuously and regularly without missing an appointment.
