Nursing care of postoperative patient with open colostomy complicated with sepsis and acute kidney injury: A case study

This study was case study aimed to study the adaptation of the nursing process for postoperative patients with open colostomy complicated with sepsis and acute kidney injury. A single case study of a postoperative patient with open colostomy procedure complicated with sepsis and acute kidney injury, treated in the female surgical ward, Banpong hospital, involving a total of one case. Nursing care processes, the Gordons’ Health Plan Framework, and Orem’s self-care theory were applied in preoperative, postoperative, and discharge planning.
Results : A 69-year-old Thai female patient presented with abdominal colicky pain, nausea, vomiting, and watery diarrhea five times. The patient and family lacked knowledge about pre-and postoperatively and was found to have a sepsis. Anxiety related to body image and healthcare utilization was observed. Nursing care, included with Orem’s self-care theory, was used to enable the patient care for herself with the family. The patient recovered form the critical illness, and all problems were resolved before discharge. No complications were observed.
