Nursing management of an obese diabetic patient undergoing anesthesia for appendectomy: A case study.

This case study aimed to study nursing care for obese patients with diabetes who underwent anesthesia for appendicitis surgery. The study included a female patient who presented with pain in the lower right abdomen. The doctor diagnosed her with appendicitis and required surgical treatment. The patient had a body mass index of 38.81 kg/m2 and had diabetes as a co-morbidity.
Results: The difficulty of intubation was assessed as Level 2. Intubation was successfully performed using a specialized device, a video laryngoscope with a stylet, and the patient was positioned in the Ramp position. General anesthesia was administered. During the surgery, there were no instances of hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia. Postoperatively, the endotracheal tube was successfully removed. In the recovery room, the patient was not fully alert and exhibited snoring respiration, requiring prolonged oxygen therapy compared to other patients. Based on the nursing care plan across all three phase: pre-anesthesia, anesthesia administration, and post-anesthesia, it was observed that the patient remained safe with no anesthetic complications and was able to return to normal activities.
