Nursing care of a thyroidectomy patient with critical hypocalcemia : A Case Study

This study was case study aimed to study the nursing care of a thyroid cancer patient who underwent surgery and developed hypocalcemia. An 83-year-old Thai female patient was admitted to the hospital on August 3, 2023, presenting with significant symptoms, including an enlarging neck mass, difficulty swallowing, and weight loss over the past month.
Results: She was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and scheduled for surgery. Before the surgery, she experienced anxiety. Postoperatively, she was at risk for airway obstruction, hypocalcemia, wound pain, and potential wound infection. A nursing care plan was established to monitor and address these complications. After the surgery, the patient was successfully weaned off mechanical ventilation. Nursing care included the prevention and management of hypocalcemia until calcium levels returned to normal, care of the surgical wound (which healed well without infection), and pain relief through medication and patient education. The patient’s condition improved progressively, and she was discharged on August 7, 2023, after spending a total of 4 days in the hospital.
