Development of nursing care model for prevent infection in newborns of Srisangwan Hospital, Mae Hong Son Province.

Abstract

     This research and development aimed to develop and implement a nursing model to prevent infection in newborns at Srisangwan Hospital. Sample groupconsisted of 25 professional nurses to caring and 158 mothers and infants. Research tools were: 1) Qualitative instruments including open-ended focus group and Quantitative instruments  including general data collection forms, infant care skill assessment forms, maternal self-care skill assessment forms, and satisfaction assessment forms; and medical data collection forms. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and before-after comparisons using Paired-t test statistics. Qualitative analysis was conducted using content analysis.
     Results found were problems with personnel lacking knowledge and implementation of practices. There were problems with maternal and infant care lacking confidence in preventing infection in infants and lack of coordination and coordination among the multidisciplinary team. The development process consists of 5 important models as follows: 1) Develop a coordinating nurse structure 2) Develop specialized nurse competencies in preventing newborn infection 3) Develop a manual and guidelines that are used in the same way throughout the organization 4) Create participation of the multidisciplinary team in the delivery room 5) Develop a referral system for mothers at risk and newborns with bloodstream infection. The results of the model found that the incidence of newborn infection decreased, the level of maternal and newborn care skills to prevent infection improved, the level of self-care skills in mothers to prevent infection, and the level of satisfaction increased significantly at the .05 level (t = 14.62, 15.56, 10.24).
