Nursing care of substance use patients with aggressive behavior: 2 case studies.

Abstract

     This study was case study aimed to compare the nursing care provided to two substance use patients with aggressive behavior. The samples were purposively selected based on specified from admitted to Nathom Hospital patient who has substance use history with aggressive behaviors and high risk of violence. The study was conducted on the first patient who received services on March 1,2024 , and the second patient on July 27, 2024. Data were corrected using interviews, observations and medical records. The concept of patient health assessment according to Gordon’s 11 health model, the overt aggression screening and determine nursing diagnosis together with nursing process concepts to apply in nursing care.

     Main findings: Case 1 : male 31 years old presenting with speaking incoherently, irritability and violent behavior 1 days before hospital admission. He was diagnosed with Multiple Substance-Induced Psychosis Disorder and received treatment by injecting haloperidol 5 mg IM, and valium 10 mg IV every 6 hours according to 8 nursing plans. The symptoms improved and the patient was discharged home. Case 2 : male 37 years old 1 day before hospital admission, had symptoms of not sleep, speaking incoherently and aggressive behavior . The patient was diagnosis with Multiple Substance-Induced psychosis received treatment by injecting haloperidol 5 mg IM, and valium 5 mg IV every 6 hours according to 7 nursing plans. The symptoms improved and the patient was discharged home. Patients received treatment according to the guideline 2018 of department of mental health for acute psychiatric care.
