Abstract

The purpose of this quasi-experimental research, with two-groups pre-posttest design, were to study The Effects of a Diabetes Self-Management Program on Glycemic Control Behaviors and Hemoglobin A1c of Uncontrolled Type 2 Diabetic Patients, San Kamphaeng Hospital, Chiang Mai Province. The sample group consisted of 60 patients with type 2 diabetes, with an average blood sugar level of more than 7 percent, at an outpatient department clinic. They were randomly assigned into a control (n=30) and experimental group (n=30). The control group received routine nursing care while the experimental group received a Diabetes Self-Management Program for 12 weeks. The research instrument included a Diabetes Self-Management Program, Glycemic controlled behaviors and HbA1c assessment forms. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and paired and unpaired t test.

The results showed that at posttest, the mean scores of glycemic control behaviors of the experimental group were significantly higher than those of the control group
(p-value<.05). The mean of HbA1c of the experimental group was significantly lower than those in the control group (p-value<.05).
