Comparative Effects of Inpatient Hospital Care and Home Ward Care on Length of Stay, Treatment Costs, Re-admission Rates, and Complications in Pneumonia Patients at Ban Phai Hospital, Khon Kaen Province

This research is a retrospective study using patient medical records from Ban Phai Hospital with ICD-10 codes J12–J18, collected between January 2023 and December 2024. The objective was to compare treatment outcomes between hospital-based inpatient care and home-based inpatient care (Home Ward) in pneumonia patients, focusing on hospital length of stay, treatment costs, readmission rates, and complications. The sample consisted of electronic medical records of pneumonia patients treated either as inpatients at the hospital or through the Home Ward program at Ban Phai Hospital, Khon Kaen Province. Each group included 40 patients, totaling 80 participants. Research instruments included data collection forms for demographic information, length of hospital stay, treatment costs, one-month post-discharge readmission rates, and complications during and after treatment. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics for frequencies and percentages, and the independent t-test for comparisons.
The results showed that the Home Ward group had significantly shorter hospital stays and lower treatment costs than the hospital inpatient group (p < .001 and p < .05, respectively). However, there were no statistically significant differences between the two groups in terms of one-month readmission rates or complications during and after treatment (p > .05).
