Developing a model for empowerment in families of psychiatric patients to promote medication adherence through community participation.

This research and development aimed to 1) study the situation and factors associated with medication adherence in psychiatric patients, 2) develop a model of empowerment for families of psychiatric patients to promote medication adherence with community participation, 3) evaluate the appropriateness and feasibility of the model, and 4) study the results of using the model. The research was conducted in 4 steps: 1) study the situation and needs, 2) develop the model, 3) trial use, and 4) improve the model. The samples included 12 psychiatric patients, 10 families of the patients, 5 public health personnel, and 5 community leaders/VHVs. The research was conducted from March 2024 to May 2025. The research instruments included a medication adherence assessment form, a family knowledge, attitude and skills assessment form, and a community participation assessment form. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Paired t-test.
The research results found that after using the model, Patients' medication adherence score increased from 22.67 to 31.33 (p<0.001). Families' knowledge score increased from 2.50 to 4.30, attitude score increased from 16.80 to 21.90, and skills score increased from 14.70 to 20.60 (p<0.001). Community participation score increased from 25.80 to 40.20 (p<0.001). Participants were most satisfied with the model (=4.55, SD±0.57).
