Development of Nursing Model for Postoperative Pain Management in Patients Receiving General Anesthesia in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit.

This study was Participatory Action Research (PAR) project aimed at developing a nursing care model for postoperative pain management in patients receiving general anesthesia in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), based on Donabedian’s framework. The research was conducted in three phases: situation analysis, development of the nursing care model, and evaluation of its effectiveness. The study population included 120 postoperative patients who underwent general anesthesia and received PACU care (60 in the control group and 60 in the experimental group), Data were collected between June and July 2025 using questionnaires, a feasibility assessment form, a pain score scale, and pain management records. Data analysis involved descriptive statistics, Chi-square tests, and independent t-tests.
Results: The developed nursing care model significantly reduced postoperative pain scores at 15, 30, and 45 minutes in the recovery room (P = 0.00, 0.00, and 0.03). Pain management using Morphine and Fentanyl showed differences depending on the drug type and timing of assessment. Before PACU discharge, patients’ pain levels were within a range of 0–3. No complications were reported, and the length of PACU stay did not differ significantly (P = 0.17). Nurse anesthetists rated the model highly feasible (97.7%) and reported high satisfaction (mean = 4.24, SD = 0.72).
