Nursing Care of a Patient with Choledocholithiasis, Acute Cholangitis, and Acute Pancreatitis Undergoing Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography : A Case Study

Abstract

      This case study aimed to examine nursing care for a patient with common bile duct stones complicated by acute cholangitis and acute pancreatitis who underwent Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). The patient was a 51-year-old Thai male admitted with abdominal pain, fever, jaundice, and vomiting. CT scan confirmed the diagnosis, and treatment included ERCP with sphincterotomy and insertion of stent into bile duct. Preoperative nursing care focused on managing sepsis, relieving abdominal pain, correcting fluid and electrolyte imbalance, administering antibiotics, and providing psychological support. Postoperative care emphasized monitoring for complications after ERCP, including gastrointestinal bleeding and worsening pancreatitis, as well as pain management and discharge preparation.

      The results showed that the patient recovered safely without severe complications. The patient demonstrated confidence in self-care and was discharged after a total hospital stay of five days.
