The Perspectives of Multidisciplinary Teams in the Continuity of Care (COC) on Oral Health Care for Dependent Patients at Somdet Prayannasungworn Hospital, Chiang Rai province, Thailand

This survey research aimed to explore the perspectives of multidisciplinary team members regarding oral health care for dependent patients within the Continuity of Care (COC) system, and to utilize the findings as a foundation for developing and integrating oral health care into the primary care system appropriate to the local context. Thirty healthcare professionals from nine disciplines at the COC Center, Somdet Phra Yanasangwon Hospital, Wiang Chai District, Chiang Rai Province, were purposively selected. Data were collected through focus group discussions and non-participant observation, then analyzed qualitative method by using Thematic Analysis following Braun & Clarke's six-phase framework.
Result : Five major themes emerged: (1) oral health is recognized as an essential component of dependent patient care but remains a lower priority in practice; (2) multidisciplinary team competency in oral health care is limited to basic screening; (3) caregivers are the most critical determinant of oral health care quality; (4) the COC system has a supporting structure but lacks systematic integration of oral health; and (5) systemic development approaches for integrating oral health into COC. Analysis using the 1A4C primary care framework identified the largest gaps in comprehensiveness, continuity of care, and coordination.
