The Relationship between Body Image and Social Support among Postoperative Oral Cancer Patients at Suratthani Cancer Hospital

This correlational survey research was conducted to study the levels of body image, social support, related factors, and the relationship between body image and social support among postoperative oral cancer patients at Suratthani Cancer Hospital. The sample consisted of 41 postoperative oral cancer patients selected according to specified criteria during the years 2024–2025 (B.E. 2567–2568). The research instruments included a personal information questionnaire, the Hopwood body image scale, and the House social support questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Independent t-test, One-way ANOVA, and Spearman’s rank correlation.
The results of the research were as follows: The majority of the sample were male 70.73% with an average age of 61.32 years. Most were diagnosed with tongue cancer (CA Tongue) in stage 2 and were on average 6–12 months post-surgery. Variable Levels Overall, patients had a good level of body image (= 30.31). However, the behavioral dimension was at a moderate level, particularly regarding difficulties in eating and speaking. Overall social support was at a high level (
= 58.19), with emotional support from family being the most significant factor. The duration after surgery had a statistically significant effect on body image (p = 0.027). Specifically, the group that underwent surgery less than 3 months prior had a higher negative body image score than other groups. Additionally, patients without underlying diseases perceived a higher level of social support than those with comorbidities (p = 0.038). In general, no significant relationship was found between body image and social support. However, a significant negative correlation was found between the cognitive and perceptual dimension of body image and informational social support (rs = -0.345, p < 0.05).
