Factors Affecting Core Competencies of Dentists in Community Hospitals, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province

This cross-sectional study by survey research aimed to (1) examine the levels of emotional intelligence and core competencies, and (2) investigate the factors affecting core competencies of dentists working in community hospitals in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province. The sample consisted of 78 dentists working in community hospitals in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, calculated using Krejcie and Morgan's formula and obtained through simple random sampling. The instrument was a researcher-developed questionnaire consisting of three parts. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and stepwise multiple regression analysis.
Results showed that most of the sample were female (78.21%), with a mean age of 35.71 years and a mean work experience of 9.81 years. Overall emotional intelligence was at a high level (M = 3.91, SD = 0.410), with self-awareness as the highest dimension (M = 4.12) and social skills as the lowest at a moderate level (M = 3.63). Overall core competency was at a good level (M = 4.01, SD = 0.432), with service mind ranked highest (M = 4.36), while achievement motivation and expertise accumulation were the lowest dimensions (M = 3.81). Overall emotional intelligence was the primary predictor (β = .738, p < .001), followed by age as the secondary predictor (β = .219, p = .002), while other demographic variables did not enter the equation. Together, both variables explained 64.80% of the variance (Adjusted R² = .648, F = 71.765, p < .001).
