Effect of Video Media for Preparation of Patients for One Day Surgery Colonoscopy at the Pre-anesthetic Clinic, Mahasarakham Hospital

This quasi-experimental study using a two-group pretest–posttest design aimed to compare knowledge of pre- and post-colonoscopy preparation, pre-procedural anxiety, and patient readiness between patients receiving video-based education and those receiving routine verbal instruction, and to assess satisfaction with the video. The participants were 100 patients undergoing one day surgery colonoscopy at the Pre-anesthetic Clinic, Mahasarakham Hospital. Convenience sampling was used to allocate 50 participants to the experimental group, which received video-based education plus standard instruction, and 50 to the control group, which received routine verbal instruction. The instruments included a demographic data form, a knowledge test, the Thai version of the State Anxiety Scale, a Patient Readiness Questionnaire, and a satisfaction questionnaire. Cronbach’s alpha coefficients were 0.84, 0.88, 0.87, and 0.91, respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, paired t-test, independent t-test, and ANCOVA controlling for pretest scores, with statistical significance set at .05.
The experimental group had significantly higher posttest knowledge than pretest knowledge (8.42 ± 1.21 vs. 4.58 ± 1.36; t = 26.18, p < .001) and higher posttest knowledge than the control group (6.32 ± 1.54; t = 7.56, p < .001). Posttest anxiety in the experimental group decreased significantly from baseline (34.58 ± 6.42 vs. 50.52 ± 7.44; t = -28.99, p < .001) and was lower than that in the control group (45.44 ± 7.87; t = -7.56, p < .001). Posttest readiness in the experimental group increased significantly from baseline (67.20 ± 5.43 vs. 51.28 ± 6.32; t = 31.76, p < .001) and was higher than that in the control group (53.86 ± 5.65; t = 12.04, p < .001). ANCOVA confirmed significant between-group differences after adjustment for pretest scores for all outcomes (p < .001, partial η² = 0.534–0.775). Overall satisfaction with the video was at the highest level (43.96 ± 4.12 out of 50).
