Predictive Factors of Health Literacy among Caregivers of Diabetic Older Adults at Risk for Chronic Kidney Disease in Amnat Charoen Province.

This study aimed to examine: 1) health literacy among caregivers of older adults with diabetes mellitus at risk for chronic kidney disease; 2) the relationships between age, educational level, duration of caregiving, family relationships, health status perception, motivation, and social support with health literacy among caregivers of older adults with diabetes mellitus at risk for chronic kidney disease; and 3) the predictive influence of the factors of age, educational level, duration of caregiving, family relationships, health status perception, motivation, and social support on health literacy among caregivers of older adults with diabetes mellitus at risk for chronic kidney disease.
The research was survey research. The sample consisted of 150 caregivers of older adults with diabetes mellitus at risk for chronic kidney disease in Amnat Charoen Province, selected through multi-stage random sampling. The research instrument was a questionnaire comprising six sections: 1) general information; 2) family relationships; 3) health literacy; 4) health status perception; 5) motivation; and 6) social support. The content validity index for sections 2–6 ranged from .80 to 1.00, and Cronbach's alpha coefficients for sections 2–6 were .72, .78, .82, .93, and .95, respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression analysis.
The research results revealed that 1) Overall health literacy among caregivers of older adults with diabetes mellitus at risk for chronic kidney disease was at a moderate level. 2) Age, educational level, family relationships, motivation, and social support were significantly correlated with health literacy at the .05 level. 3) Motivation, educational level, and age collectively explained 24.5% of the variance in health literacy among caregivers of older adults with diabetes mellitus at risk for chronic kidney disease, with statistical significance at the .05 level.
