Development of a Model for Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Using Community and Network-Based Approach in Surin Province

Abstract

     This action research aimed to 1) investigate the conditions, problems, and needs for developing a community and network-based rehabilitation model for substance users in Surin Province, 2) develop the community and network-based rehabilitation model, and 3) evaluate the effectiveness of the developed model. The study was conducted using the PAOR (Planning, Action, Observation, Reflection) cycle. The participants included 75 key informants from network partners in Phase 1, and a specific experimental group of 205 substance use disorder patients in Phase 3, using a One Group Pretest-Posttest Design. The data collection instruments consisted of a demographic questionnaire, a situation and operational model questionnaire, standardized assessment tools, and clinical outcome measures. Additionally, qualitative instruments included a semi-structured interview guide and focus group discussion guidelines. For data analysis, quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, including frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation. Inferential statistics utilized the Paired Samples t-test to compare the effectiveness before and after the experiment. Qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis.

     The research results were After implementing the SURIN Model, the experimental group showed a significantly higher mean score for Quality of Life (WHOQOL) and a lower mean score for the Overt Aggression Scale (OAS) compared to pre-test scores (p < .001). Furthermore, 88.78% of the participants had negative urine tests, with a retention rate of 93.18%.
