Factors affecting oral health care behavior of the elderly receiving dental services at Phon Sawan Hospital, Nakhon Phan.

This survey research was cross-sectional study aimed to study personal factors, dental health status factors, knowledge about oral health, health belief models, and oral health care behaviors of elderly people receiving dental services at Phon Sawan Hospital, Nakhon Phanom Province. (2) To study the relationship between personal factors, dental health status factors, knowledge about oral health factors, and health belief model factors on oral health care behaviors of elderly people receiving dental services at Phon Sawan Hospital, Nakhon Phanom Province. The sample consisted of 303 elderly patients receiving dental services at Phon Sawan Hospital, Nakhon Phanom Province, who met the specified criteria and were willing to participate in the study. The instruments used included questionnaires on general information, dental health status, oral health knowledge, oral health belief models, and oral health care behaviors. The study was conducted from June to August 2025. Data were analyzed using statistical software with descriptive statistics, Chi-square test, Pearson correlation coefficients and multiple regression analysis. The statistical significance level was set at 0.05.
The study results showed that: 1) The sample group had a high overall knowledge of oral health ( = 16.28, S.D. = 2.76); 2) The overall health belief model score was also high (
= 85.92, S.D. = 7.82); 3) The sample group had a moderate overall oral health care behavior (
= 45.74, S.D. = 4.43); 4) Education level, occupation, and income were significantly correlated with oral health care behavior (p < .05); 5) DMFT, CPI index, OHI-S index, and number of posterior occlusal pairs were significantly correlated with oral health care behavior (p < .05); and 6) Knowledge of oral health had a positive correlation with oral health care behavior. 7) The overall health belief model had a moderate and statistically significant positive correlation with oral health care behavior (r = 0.447, p < .001), and 8) the eight variables together predicted 33.0% of the variance in oral health care behavior (Adjusted R² = 0.312).
