Factors Influencing the Competence of Professional Nurses in Caring for Cancer Patients Receiving Chemotherapy in Tertiary Hospitals of Health Region 9, Thailand.

This cross-sectional descriptive study aimed to examine factors influencing the competence of professional nurses caring for cancer patients receiving chemotherapy in tertiary hospitals of Health Region 9, Thailand. The sample consisted of 92 professional nurses recruited by census method. Data were collected using a questionnaire comprising three parts: personal characteristics, work motivation, and professional nursing competence. The instrument was validated by five experts, yielding a CVI of 1.00. Cronbach’s alpha coefficients were 0.95 for work motivation and 0.98 for professional nursing competence. Data were collected via Google Forms from March 26 to May 22, 2026. Descriptive statistics, Pearson’s correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression analysis were used for data analysis.
The results revealed that the overall professional nursing competence was at a high level (x̄ = 4.31, S.D. = 0.52), and overall work motivation was also at a high level (x̄ = 4.16, S.D. = 0.51). Specialized training in chemotherapy or oncology nursing programs had a moderate positive correlation with professional competence (r = 0.417, p-value < 0.001). Overall work motivation was also moderately and positively correlated with competence (r = 0.687, p-value < 0.001). The significant predictors of professional nursing competence were administrative supervision, clinical experience in caring for cancer patients receiving chemotherapy, specialized chemotherapy or oncology training, and responsibility motivation. These four variables jointly explained 65.9% of the variance in professional nursing competence (R² = 0.659, p-value < 0.001).
