This quasi-experimental study aimed to evaluate the effect of a health education program on knowledge and self-care behaviors for preventing febrile neutropenia in lymphoma patients receiving chemotherapy. The program was developed based on Orem's Self-Care Theory. The sample consisted of lymphoma patients receiving chemotherapy at the Chemotherapy Unit, Mahasarakham Hospital, selected by purposive sampling and divided into two groups: a control group (n = 18) and an experimental group (n = 18). The research instruments were (1) a knowledge questionnaire and (2) a self-care behavior questionnaire for preventing febrile neutropenia, comprising a personal data form and a self-care behavior scale. Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and t-test.
The results revealed that: (1) after receiving the program, the knowledge scores of the experimental group were significantly higher than before (p = .001); (2) after the program, the knowledge scores of the experimental group were significantly higher than those of the control group (p < .001); (3) after receiving the program, the mean self-care behavior scores of the experimental group were significantly higher than before (p = .001); and (4) after the program, the mean self-care behavior scores of the experimental group were significantly higher than those of the control group (p < .001).
