Abstract

Nurses’ spiritual care competence enables nurses to assess and respond appropriately to patients’ spiritual needs and contributes to holistic care encompassing physical, psychological, social, and spiritual dimensions. This cross-sectional descriptive study aimed to examine the spiritual care competence of nurses at Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital. The sample comprised 304 registered nurses. Participants were selected using stratified random sampling by years of work experience and nursing service, followed by simple random sampling within each stratum. Quantitative data were collected in December 2025. The instruments consisted of a personal information questionnaire and the Thai version of the 27-item Spiritual Care Competence Scale (SCCS), translated using a back-translation process. The overall Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was 0.97. Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and range. The results showed that the overall spiritual care competence of nurses was at a high level (Mean = 3.88, SD = 0.41). The domains of attitude toward patients’ spirituality, communication, assessment and implementation of spiritual care, and personal support and patient counseling were at a high level, whereas professionalisation and improving the quality of spiritual care and referral to professionals were at a moderate level.
