Abstract

This quasi-experimental study aimed to investigate the effects of of a sandbag exercise program on the severity of osteoarthritis in the elderly. The participants consisted of 30 older adults with knee pain who received services at Tadop Subdistrict Health Promoting Hospital, Mueang Si Sa Ket District, Si Sa Ket Province, Thailand. The intervention was a sandbag exercise program designed to reduce the severity of knee osteoarthritis in older adults. The program was implemented over a 12-week period from March to May 2026. Data were collected before and after the intervention using a structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, including frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, were used to summarize the data. Inferential statistics were analyzed using the paired-samples t-test, with the level of statistical significance set at p < 0.05.

The results showed that, after completing the intervention, participants demonstrated significantly improved perceptions of knee osteoarthritis prevention (perceived causes), with a high mean score (Mean = 28.63, SD = 1.47). Perceived illness severity, preventive behaviors related to exercise, and dietary behaviors for preventing knee osteoarthritis also reached high levels, with mean scores of 28.93 (SD = 1.04), 27.07 (SD = 2.36), and 29.80 (SD = 5.63), respectively. All post-intervention mean scores were significantly higher than the pre-intervention scores (P-value <0.05). Comparison of the knee range of motion (ROM) before and after participation in the sandbag exercise program revealed significant improvements in all measured dimensions. The mean left knee flexion was 91.12° (SD = 10.12), left knee extension was 93.33° (SD = 16.59), right knee flexion was 104.50° (SD = 13.15), and right knee extension was 87.17° (SD = 8.58). Overall, knee joint range of motion improved significantly following the intervention in every dimension (p-value <0.05).
