This study aimed to describe the clinical characteristics of patients with severe burn injuries and to identify factors associated with mortality among patients admitted to Pranangklao Hospital. A retrospective study was conducted among patients with severe burn injuries admitted to Pranangklao Hospital between January 1, 2020, and December 31, 2024. Data were collected from medical records using a standardized data collection form. Descriptive statistics, including frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations, were used to summarize patient characteristics. Associations between clinical factors and mortality were evaluated using Fisher’s exact test for categorical variables and the independent-samples t-test for continuous variables, as appropriate. A p-value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant.
Results: A total of 81 patients with severe burn injuries were included in the study. Three patients died, corresponding to an overall mortality rate of 3.7%. Mortality occurred in two patients with electrical burns (16.7%) and one patient with a chemical burn (33.3%). The cause of burn injury was significantly associated with mortality (p = 0.013). All three patients who died had third-degree burns, and the presence of a third-degree burn was significantly associated with mortality (p = 0.018). The deceased patients were predominantly between 20 and 70 years of age, with a mean age of 46 years, and mortality tended to be higher among patients aged 60–80 years. All three deaths occurred among patients with burns involving more than 20% of the total body surface area (TBSA), and TBSA greater than 20% was significantly associated with mortality (p = 0.019). The mean length of hospital stay among patients who died ranged from 15 to 19 days.
