Development of Nurse Competency Framework in Orthopedics Critical Care Unit, Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital.

This survey research aimed to develop a competency framework for nurses in the orthopedic critical care unit at Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital by applying the competency framework development strategy of Marrelli et al. (2005). The study population included six experts in orthopedic critical care nursing and samples consisted of six specialists. The research tools consisted of a competency checklist and semi-structured open-ended interview questions. Data were collected through a literature review related to the topic, interviews with experts in orthopedic critical care nursing and development of a draft competency framework. Data analysis was conducted by content analysis and calculating the item content validity index for each competency behavioral indicator.
The results showed that the competency framework for nurses in the orthopedic critical care unit at Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital comprises 3 main competency domains divided into 12 sub-competencies with a total of 93 behavioral indicators as follows: 1) Competency in respiratory system care for orthopedics critical patients, comprising 3 sub-competencies with 21 behavioral indicators 2) Competency in cardiovascular system care for orthopedics critical patients, comprising 4 sub-competencies with 33 behavioral indicators and3) Competency in musculoskeletal system care for orthopedics critical patients, comprising 5 sub-competencies with 39 behavioral indicators.
