Abstract

This quasi-experimental, two-group study aimed to examine the effects of a life skills promotion program utilizing a group process on stress and depression levels among lower secondary school students. Comparisons were made between experimental and control groups at pre-test, post-test, and a 4-week follow-up. The sample consisted of 64 lower secondary school students in Ban Na District, Nakhon Nayok Province. Participants were matched and assigned to either the experimental group (n=32; divided into subgroups of 8), which participated in the 8-session life skills program (90 minutes per session over 4 weeks), or the control group (n=32), which received standard care. Research instruments included the SPST-20, Thai PHQ-A, and STAI Y-2. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Chi-square, Fisher's exact test, Pairwise McNemar's test, Repeated Measures ANOVA, and the Friedman test.

Results: In the experimental group, the proportion of students with high stress levels decreased from 44.4% to 0.0% at both post-test and follow-up (p<.05), whereas 21.9% of the control group still exhibited high stress levels at follow-up. Regarding depression, the proportion of students without depression in the experimental group increased from 21.9% to 96.9% at post-test and 87.5% at follow-up (p<.001); conversely, the control group showed an increase in moderate depression levels to 28.1% at follow-up. Repeated Measures ANOVA revealed a statistically significant interaction effect between group and time (Group × Time Interaction) on mean stress and depression scores (p<.001).
