A Study of Traditional Palm-Leaf Manuscript Anthelmintic Recipe from Wat Mahachai, Isan Region in Patients with Intestinal Helminthiasis

Abstract

     This Preliminary Clinical Trial / One-Group Pretest-Posttest Design aimed to evaluate the efficacy in reducing helminth egg counts and the safety of a Thai traditional herbal anthelmintic formula according to the Wat Mahachai Palm-Leaf Manuscript in patients with intestinal helminthiasis in the Northeastern region of Thailand. A purposive sampling technique was used to select 5 participants diagnosed with intestinal helminthiasis to receive the Wat Mahachai Palm-Leaf Manuscript herbal anthelmintic formula. Efficacy was evaluated by counting fecal helminth eggs (Egg per gram: EPG) using the Ether Formalin Concentration Method before and after treatment, alongside monitoring laboratory safety parameters.

     Results: The Wat Mahachai Palm-Leaf Manuscript herbal anthelmintic formula reduced the average helminth egg count from 383.00 to 25.00 EPG, achieving a treatment efficacy of 93.69%. Statistical evaluation showed a significant reduction in fecal egg counts post-treatment (p < 0.05), with no observed hepatotoxicity or nephrotoxicity, demonstrating high efficacy without severe adverse effects and highlighting its potential for further development as a standardized herbal treatment.
