Abstract

This academic article was survey research aimed to review and synthesize existing knowledge on the causes of older adults living alone in Thailand from two perspectives: necessity and choice. The necessity dimension encompasses economic constraints, the migration of adult children, and changes in family structure, whereas the choice dimension reflects older adults' desire for independent living and their intention to avoid becoming a burden on others. The article further examines the impact of living alone on the physical health, mental health, and economic well-being of older adults. It also reviews Thailand's current policies and long-term care service system for older adults and proposes practical recommendations for nurses and healthcare professionals to conduct comprehensive assessments and provide holistic care for older adults living alone. These recommendations aim to promote aging in place safely while enhancing their quality of life.

The literature review indicates that living alone is associated with an increased risk of depression, loneliness, and premature mortality. Nevertheless, many older adults report satisfaction with living alone when they receive adequate social support. Therefore, policy recommendations should focus on strengthening social support networks and developing accessible primary healthcare services, while simultaneously empowering older adults to live independently in a safe, dignified, and sustainable manner.
