The Effect of Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) from Agaricus bisporus (White Button Mushrooms) on BMI, FBS, and Blood Lipids in Metabolic Syndrome: A Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of Champignon Mushroom Powder extract (glycosaminoglycans; GAGs) on the physical and blood biochemical parameters of individuals with metabolic syndrome. Sixty staff members of Dhurakij Pundit University were randomly allocated into two equal groups: an experimental group (n = 30) receiving 400 mg of GAG extract daily, and a control group (n = 30) receiving microcrystalline cellulose at the same dose, continuously for three months. Data were collected at four time points: baseline (M0), month 1 (M1), month 2 (M2), and month 3 (M3). Monitored variables included body mass index (BMI), blood pressure (SBP and DBP), alongside blood biochemical parameters, namely fasting blood sugar (FBS), HbA1c, triglycerides (TGs), total cholesterol (CH), LDL-C, and HDL-C. Data were analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA, and between-group comparisons were performed using regression analysis at a significance level of p < 0.05.
The findings showed that following the intervention, the experimental group demonstrated significant reductions in BMI, FBS, HbA1c, TGs, cholesterol, and LDL-C (p < 0.05), both compared to their baseline values and the control group. Conversely, the control group exhibited a significant increase in these parameters. No significant differences were observed in blood pressure (SBP and DBP) or HDL-C levels, both within each group and between the two groups.
