Abstract

This study aimed to compare caregivers’ mean scores for knowledge, attitudes, and caregiving behaviors before and after participation in an education program for children with epilepsy and to assess caregivers’ satisfaction with the program. A quasi-experimental, one-group pretest–posttest design was employed. The participants were 45 caregivers of school-aged children aged 6–12 years who had been diagnosed with epilepsy for at least six months and received care at the Pediatric Neurology Clinic, Outpatient Department, Udon Thani Hospital. Participants were recruited according to predetermined eligibility criteria and voluntarily participated in the study. Data were collected from May to August 2026. The research instruments consisted of a demographic and epilepsy-related information questionnaire, a knowledge assessment, an attitude assessment, a caregiving behavior assessment, and a caregiver satisfaction questionnaire. The education program comprised four sessions delivered over a 12-week period. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the paired-samples t-test, and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test.

Results: Following participation in the education program, caregivers’ mean knowledge scores significantly increased from 14.29 (SD = 2.47) to 18.27 (SD = 1.30) (p < 0.001). The mean caregiving behavior scores also significantly increased from 45.51 (SD = 2.63) to 58.02 (SD = 1.53) (p < .001). In contrast, the mean attitude score significantly decreased from 63.04 (SD = 7.78) to 49.31 (SD = 4.23), representing a mean reduction of 13.73 points (p < .001). According to the scoring criteria of the study instrument, this reduction indicated a shift toward more appropriate attitudes toward caring for children with epilepsy. Overall, caregivers reported the highest level of satisfaction with the education program, with a mean score of 4.90 (SD = 0.33).
