Abstract

      The purposes of this research were to study individual characteristics and experience factors, behavior-specific cognition and affect factors and self-management behaviors among diabetes mellitus patients with chronic kidney disease, and to investigate the factors influencing self-management behaviors among diabetic mellitus patients with chronic kidney disease at Kantang Hospital, Trang Province. This study employed a survey research design. The sample consists of 90 diabetes mellitus patients with chronic kidney disease receiving treatment at the CKD clinic, Kantang Hospital, Trang Province using a simple random sampling method. The research instruments consisted of questionnaires on perceived health status, prior related behavior, perceived benefits of action, perceived barriers to action, perceived self - efficacy, activity-related affect, interpersonal influences, situational influences and self-management behaviors among diabetes mellitus patients with chronic kidney disease. Data analysis was performed by descriptive statistics and inferential statistics: frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviations, chi-square tests, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and multiple regression analysis.

      The research findings revealed that individual characteristics and experiences related to perceived health status and prior-related behaviors generally had average scores at a good level. The behavior specific cognition and affect factors related to perceived benefits of action, perceived self-efficacy, activity-related affect, interpersonal influences, and situational influences, had overall average scores at a good level. Overall, self-management behaviors among diabetes mellitus patients with chronic kidney disease were practiced frequently. Hypothesis testing revealed that the variables perceived health status, prior related behavior, perceived barriers to action, and situational influences significantly affected self-management behavior among diabetic patients with chronic kidney disease at Kantang Hospital, Trang Province, at the .01 level statistical significance. Perceived health status and prior related behavior together jointly explained 33% of the variance in self-management behavior, while perceived barriers to action and situational influences together jointly explained 41% of the variance in self-management behavior.
