Abstract

This study reports on the analysis of nursing texts for teaching and learning at Borommarajajonnani College of Nursing, Ratchaburi, Thailand. The study aims to analyse generic structures of the texts used for teaching and learning for nursing students. The texts gathered for the detailed analysis consist of four selected Thai nursing texts (mother’s postpartum haemorrhage, mother’s pain and after pain, adaptation of maternal role and promotion on breastfeeding) which are about maternal and child care in postpartum period in the field of midwifery nursing. The analysis shows that the texts focus on purposes, contents, how to take care of mother and child upon different situations. The study also reveals that using the texts for nursing students helps support students to discover supporting details as subjective data. Then the data obtained leads to writing a nursing diagnosis about clients effectively. That is, the nursing diagnosis consists of problems of clients, causes of problems which lead students to write nursing objectives, problem solutions on clients and the students can write the criteria of nursing care and they practice nursing care more appropriately and they finally can evaluate results of nursing care depending on the criteria set up. In addition, the findings of the study show that there are two main types of genres involving the nursing plan writing; information report genre which involves gathering data about patients and explanation genre which involves causes and effects. The study recommends that students should give priority on clients’ history which will support them to more understand clients well in different contexts.
