A Study of Semantic Change of /thîːaw/ from the Sukhothai Period to A.D. 2021

Abstract
This article aims to study the semantic change of /thîːaw/ from the Sukhothai period to A.D. 2021. By applying the classification of words according to the meaning criteria of Navavan Bandhumedha and defining semantic features to separate the sub-meanings of the words, the result shows that “/thîːaw/” appears to be used as follows: 1) 523 words of action verb, classified as 218 action verbs of movement and 305 action verbs of frequency, 2) 19 words for classification, 3) 26 common nouns (time words), and 4) 37 common nouns. A total of 9semantic features were found, namely [+movement] [+movement in spatial surroundings] [+an abstract destination] [+a concrete destination] [+enjoyment] [+frequency] [+religious contexts] [+the moment of doing something] and [+words that classify the movement]. This research shows the evolution of the meaning of the word "/thîːaw/" from the Sukhothai period, from signifying movement in religious contexts in the Sukhothai period to the movement that brings enjoyment at present.
