Bao Wee’s Songs: Characteristics of the Comparison and Formation of Compound Words for Love

Abstract

The purpose of this research article is to study the characteristics of the comparison and formation of compound words in Bao Wee’s songs. The data were collected from 100 songs on the YouTube channel RsaimMusic, and the concepts of comparison and formation of compound words were employed for data analysis.
The findings revealed that there are 5 types of comparisons that appeared in Bao Wee’s songs: 1) simile, such as comparing cogon grass to a heart; 2) metaphors, such as comparing humans to plants; 3) symbols, such as comparing a clock to breathing; 4) personification, such as comparing a scarecrow to a living thing; and 5) hyperbole, such as comparing tears to water in a dam. The comparisons that appeared in most of the songs show love in comparison to nature. As for the formation of compound words for love in Bao Wee’s songs, there are 3 characteristics: 1) compound words with the main part as a single word + the modifier as a single word, such as kwam-ngao (loneliness); 2) compound words with the main part as a single word + the modifier as a group of words, such as kan-ao-jai (appeasement); The compound words that appeared in the songs express the perspective of love relationships that are both fulfilled and unrequited.
