Grammaticalization to Conjunction of the Negator "haː4may2" in Thai

Abstract
This article aims to present the process of the grammaticalization to a conjunction of the negator "haː4may2", which is a word with specific content, studying data from documents from the early Rattanakosin period (B.E. 2328) to the present (B.E. 2566) and collecting data exclusively from written works in prose. The study found that the negator "haː4may2" evolved into a conjunction after going through a lexicalization. The lexicalization occurred primarily through the negative phrase becoming a negator known as univerbation. However, during the early Rattanakosin period, the grammaticalization of the negator "haː4may2" gradually occurred, which consists of both syntactic and semantic processes. Three key mechanisms include the linguistic contexts serving, reanalysis, and semantic bleaching.
