Bangkok as Gendered and Sexual City: Yes or No
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article challenges the idea that the urban city of Bangkok is constructed largely on patriarchal ideology. In the analyses of three topics including Being Biologically Female in Bangkok, Being LGBTIQ in Bangkok, and Sexual Desires in Bangkok, the author utilizes the Right to the City ( Henri Lefebvre and David Harvey) to examine the construction of Bangkok as an urban city, feminist perspectives in geography and urban studies to examine cultural allocation of space in Bangkok for biologically-female persons, and particularly Gender Performativity ( Judith Butler) to examine sociocultural construction of gender. It is anticipated that this analysis of socio-cultural construction of Bangkok as an urban city, conceived through feminist and queer perspectives in this article, will contribute to the body of knowledge in disciplines such as urban studies, feminist studies, and queer studies. Ultimately, this analysis should provide platform for conversations among women and queers in Bangkok to put forth their attention in making their Right to the City of Bangkok.
