Politics and Development of Roads on the Borders Infrastructure in Social Sciences and from an Anthropological Perspective

Abstract
This article reviews three interdependent concepts through a social scientific paradigm: infrastructure, road, and border—more specifically: the roads constructed on the borders as infrastructure. Most of these roads are funded by the state in order to develop certain areas. However, from another perspective, road planning can be seen as a tool used by the state with the aim to control and regulate movement. Border roads are therefore somewhat of a paradox; potentially creating connectivity, whilst at the same time interrupting and restricting movement. This article illustrates how studies concerning border infrastructure and roads would benefit from an anthropological perspective and an ethnographic approach so as to more broadly understand the politics of infrastructure, where social interactions and contestations concerning the development of borders generates impacts and consequences across space and time.
