Abstract

The purpose of this research article is to study the concept of transhumanism and trans-dwelling in Jo Sung-Hee's film Space Sweepers by using the building perspective and dwelling perspective as analytical frameworks. The analysis explores how technological advancements and scientific knowledge are utilized to expand human settlements from Earth to space. The narrative and elements presented in the film align with the vision of transhumanist thought, which proposes optimistic view of technological and scientific progress as a driving force for human evolution towards transitional humanity, wherein humans transcend natural limitations and their inherent human conditions. The findings reveal that the film raises critical questions about the necessity of maintaining balance in the use of technological advancements to modify environments, in order to avoid ethical consequences that could ultimately pose existential threats to humanity in the future. It argues that trans-dwelling should not rely solely on technological and scientific advancements to benefit humanity but must also consider fostering symbiotic relationships between humans and the environment through technology as a medium for learning and adaptation. This approach ensures sustainability and prevents the long-term devaluation of humanity and ecological systems.
