Methodological dynamism of Network Analysis: A preliminary perspective

This paper examines the dynamism of “Network Analysis” through a systematic literature review investigating the evolving conceptualization of "networks" in the analysis of social phenomena by comparing the philosophical and methodological underpinnings of Social Network Analysis (SNA) and Actor-Network Theory (ANT). SNA, a classic framework, primarily focuses on human relationships. In contrast, ANT, though rooted in Science and Technology Studies (STS), has found broad application across the humanities, social sciences, and interdisciplinary fields. The findings of this paper indicate that ANT proposes a significantly broader definition of networks than SNA. It posits that both human and non-human actors possess equal potential to influence meaningful interactions within a network, founded on a flat ontology. This expanded understanding of agency moves beyond traditional humanism, opening new methodological avenues for social anthropologists and sociologists interested in network-based research.
