Policy Gaps in the Dependent Older Adults in Thailand: Impacts on the Role of Family Caregivers and Policy Recommendations

Abstract

This academic article aims to explore the policy gaps related to elderly care in Thailand that affect family caregivers of dependent older adults. It seeks to analyze the problems and impacts arising from the lack of adequate governmental support measures across multiple dimensions, including physical, psychological, economic, and social aspects. The article underscores the necessity of policies that effectively address the needs of family caregivers. The findings indicate that the absence of appropriate policies results in inadequate support for family caregivers, compelling them to bear the caregiving burden in isolation. To enhance the quality of life and alleviate the caregiving burden, this study proposes policy recommendations to effectively support family caregivers, including: (1) the provision of appropriate welfare schemes and financial support systems, (2) the integration of caregivers’ roles into national policy frameworks to ensure equitable access to social benefits, and (3) developing an efficient and sustainable Long-Term Care System for the elderly. These policy recommendations provide strategic guidance for supporting family caregivers, mitigating the burdens associated with elderly care, and Leading to a sustainable solution to the challenges of an aging society.
