Discourses on Civic Buddhism in Thai Society : Problems and Solutions in View of Somdet Phra Buddhaghosacharya (P. A. Payutto)

Abstract

        This article aims to explore problems and seek possible solutions from discourses on State Buddhism in Thai society from the view of Somdet Phra Buddhaghosacharya (P.A. Payutto). Regarded as one of the most highly revered academic and philosopher of Buddhism in Thailand, P.A. Payutto’s perspectives have shed light on overcoming problems in Thailand. The results reveal several intricate problems related to the patronage and hierarchical systems between Buddhism and the state or government in the Thai society.  One of the benefits of such system is the sustainability and prosperity of Buddhism in Thai society, while its major drawback is the intervention of the state’s power on Buddhism, leading to other problems. The other agrees with many solutions proposed by P.A. Payutto as they are interesting and practical.  However, restrictions and limitations of the application of certain suggested solutions are still found.
